Healthy Halloween activities - are you brave enough to Trick or Treat?

Here comes some healthy Halloween ideas to trick or treat!

Sweets and costumes are great, but there are 'Plenty' of healthier ways to celebrate the age old tradition of Halloween.

I have come up with some 'fun for kids' half term activities families can enjoy together before and after the one night of spooky celebrations on 31st October.

Are you brave enough to add healthy options to your Halloween celebrations?

We will be sharing fun, games, pictures and recipes on Facebook: The Super Food Fight and Twitter: @thesffight, that you might like to try with your family and share for a happier, healthier and brighter half term. Enjoy!

Peter's Pumpkin carving

Pumpkin decorating is a great activity for all the family. (Parents may need to be involved if you don't have a carving kit.)

For best results we've learnt to plan our pumpkin designs on orange paper and cut them out to decorate windows and walls. Then carve or paint your pumpkins together! These healthy vegetables are always on offer at this time of year. Make sure you save the seeds to replant your own pumpkin and scoop out the fleshy innards and bake pumpkin bread or delicious pumpkin soup later. (Recipe in 'fun for kids' and pumpkin designs are shard in our online food art gallery.)

Olivia's Halloween mobile

Here's a Halloween craft which will leave you in a spin. Cut out a large card wheel then thread a cobweb design with black wool and decorate with some paper scarey faces. We added cut out spiders to dangle dangerously from the bottom of the wheel.

We have included full instructions on our 'fun for kids' section. You can add some colourful cut out foods as well like

pumpkins, green and red apples to add a healthy twist. Enjoy!

Alex Apple bobbing

It's a healthy way to your five-a-day. You need a large bucket of warm water and a few eating apples. We have used windfell apples that might be bruised. Each person is timed for 30 seconds whilst they dip their head in the bucket to retrieve apples in their mouth.

Afterwards we peel and cook them in a crumble. It's our favourite treat.

Top tip - Have a towel ready and make sure an adult is present!

We have shared our favourite crumble recipe on our 'fun for kids' section of the website.

Trick or Treat?

Mix up a bowl of sweets with fresh fruits like seedless grapes, small easy peeler satsuma segments, cherry tomatoes, any berries. Use this as a lucky dip and then every guest gets the opportunity to enjoy the treats alongside the healthy fruit. We made a massive fruit salad and added a few cookies to the mix.

Spooky Guess Who

Split into teams of even numbers. Each group selects one person to have a post-it note stuck to their head with a halloween character written on it. The person has to guess what is written on it by asking team mates questions which they can only answer YES or NO.

Halloween Scavenger Hunt:

Scavenger hunts were all about finding food to survive but nowadays they can be a great adventure for kids played inside or out, and a fun way to exercise.

We created a fantastical beasts hunt this weekend using animal toys we already had. You could hide pumpkins, oranges and apples along with some sweet treats like toffee apples then have the winner as the team with the most healthy foods collected. To make it more difficult do it tonight with the lights off using only flashlights. This makes a more spooky activity but, if outdoors, make sure each child has an older companion.
