TOP TIPS to start and sustain healthy eating - #WorldObesityDay

Today is #WorldObesityDay - find out about my mum's Healthy Eating Habits alongside the super food fight concept - From Emma.

Hayley’s tried and tested TOP 5 TIPS to start and sustain healthy eating:

Find out how we applied these tips in our home to help Emma understand more about balance and choice:

Cooking Healthy Meals:

Cooking at home is one of the most effective ways of controlling what you are eating. For busy working parents we know this is not always possible but if you plan in home cooking days, and include the kids in this activity, it’s more fun and achievable. You can also make ahead and freeze for ease. Homemade is often cheaper than takeaways and ready meals and you can have fun cooking together - we made pizzas at the weekend from scratch at a quarter of the cost even though the kids each added their favourite toppings!

Planning and Preparation:

Create a plan to help you to make healthy changes to your diet and overall lifestyle. You can then incorporate the new recipes you can try to cook yourself. Remember, a small but permanent change is best.

Plan a time to exercise that is realistic along with a weekly meal plan including your healthy swaps. We are healthy Monday to Friday in our home and plan to enjoy treats at the weekend when we have more time to exercise and burn off unwanted calories.

Introduce Healthier Options

Gradually replace the unhealthy food items in your diet with healthier choices. If you rush to swap/diet then your body will crave the sugars you were used to and you will soon be back to your old habits.

Everything in Moderation:

We believe in balance and choice! Cook as much as you need to cut down on waste and consume only as much as your body requires. We have everything available in dishes to choose from at our dinner table, whatever meal we’re having which means you choose what goes on your plate.

Drink Plenty of Water:

8 glasses of water a day is recommended - plus milk and fresh fruit juices for kids. Did you know that often your body can think it is hungry when it is actually thirsty.

If you keep well hydrated by drinking a lot of water throughout the day you can reduce headaches and feel more energised. You can go 3 weeks without food but only 3 days without water so its vital in the diet.

We hope these tips help you to put in motion your own lifelong healthy eating plan and that you enjoyed reading our blog.
